Technology Fatigue

Sometimes I feel like technology is taking over everything. It used to be that when you wanted directions, you looked at a map; to do research, you went to the library; to look at pictures, you pulled out a photo album...now everything is done on the computer! I feel like I am always looking at that glowing screen. And I long for the days when the computer was just a tool I used at work.

Can we ever go back to a less computerized lifestyle? Would anyone even want to? Will our children be able to imagine a different way of living, or will they be completely dependent on their technology?

This weekend I was feeling the need to disconnect from it all, so I took my son and went to the woods. He played on the rocks while I drew in my sketchbook. The sun was warm on my face and there was a soft breeze. It was beautiful, peaceful, and there was not a computer in sight. Perfect!!!

  1. I know how you feel, I dislike staring at the computer screen all the time. It feels odd sometimes seeing as I'm supposed to part of this technological generation.
I love the work you do with paper in your illustrations!
And thank you for the lovely comment on my blog :)

  2. hey vivi,
I just got back from our annual trip to yosemite, where i have no phone and no computer and no news, and i like it that way. But I was sad to see that now cell phones work there and people are constantly texting and reading messages and making calls. I overheard one family getting ready to go watch a movie (presumably on their laptop) in their cabin - while the persieds meteor shower is going on outside!!! Crazy. At least there is still no internet access there, for now.

  3. Hi there, thanks for your visit. You have some really interesting posts here and beautiful illustrations, too.
I feel the same way about computers sometimes. That's actually one of the reasons why I started taking analogue photos again, just to avoid digital photos and sitting in front of my laptop processing them.

  4. When I went for my first job interview at 23, I had never used a computer. Of course they gave me a computer test because it was for an Editor job at a publishing company. I could not do any of the questions and it was at that point I realized that life was going to change. I totally agree with you that technology is taking over! But I have to admit that GPS is a whole lot easier than a 7 ft street map!
